The real story – Part 1

The message that I hope to bring to you by the end of the story, is wrapped up neatly in this word, and the lyrics and music to: “ONE”.

“Bittersweet” is my script, or, as it’s better known as in the film industry, screenplay. Pre-production is set to commence in 2018. Talks are underway with Esteban Ernesto Echevarría Samson,  as he is interested in making it his directorial debut. A work of fiction (or is it, really), based on a true to life experience

Here is the real life account. The following took place between the hours of this and another universe:

On April 14th, 2006 (Good Friday), I left the Boca Raton office at 12:15 P.M. My immediate family was on their way to the Keys for the weekend. By my family, I mean Little Bernie, a 6 foot ex-Navy Submariner, Arielle, my daughter erdaught, Ana (mother of my kids), Joe (her husband) and Joey (Joe’s son). Accompanying little Bernie was Valeria, a clinical therapist who he had been seeing for a couple of weeks. I had actually yet to meet her personally but felt very close to her, as if she was my own daughter. I stopped at a Nations Bank in Boca; a stop I don’t remember making. (If not for my daughter, who in retracing my steps discovered that there was a record of me being there at 12:28 P.M. Minutes later, at 12:40 P.M., the first 911 call was made: “motorcyclist down,” 12 minutes later, Officer Bolyston of Boca Raton Police Department, arrived at the scene, but I had already been taken away and was en route to Delray Trauma Center. I don’t remember a single iota about either stopping at the bank, or going down in the accident. What I know of the “accident” I only know from the 14-page accident report generated by the Boca Raton Police Department. It is best described by one of almost a dozen witnesses that hung around and gave statements, as follows:

Witness: “I was stopped, waiting for traffic before pulling out of 906 N. Federal Hwy. I witnessed a motorcycle heading northbound on Federal. He was looking back apparently in an attempt to change lanes. I looked northbound; I had been stationary this entire time and noticed a vehicle making a u-turn directly in front of him, perhaps 100 ft. away. I saw that the motorcyclist also noticed the vehicle and began to stop, he was perhaps doing 40-45 mph and he seemed to significantly reduce speed. I could not tell if the motorcycle actually made contact with the vehicle making the u-turn or if he laid down the bike, but I did witness the motorcyclist roll northbound ahead of the wrecked motorcycle for about 25 ft. I pulled out on Federal Hwy. so as to stop the oncoming traffic, got out of the car and dialed 911 as I ran to the victim and was the first one at his side. The dispatcher asked me, “Is this about the motorcycle accident?” I said, “Yes,” and she replied, “Help is already on the way, thank you.” He was not breathing or moving. In my opinion, the driver of the Civic made a u-turn at the wrong time.”

A little detour…That takes us from my office departure, to the scene. Every ticking second happening in this physical world we live in, in this reality, is the same reality in which you are reading this, in which I wrote this. But, there was another reality taking place simultaneously at that moment. The reality I was in – and this is where my experience takes a turn, from just being in an accident and having a “brush with death,” to something of much deeper significance, to a somewhat metaphysical event, something that scientists have labeled: a “near-death-experience.”
